Many factors that contribute to patient engagement are enshrined in health professionals’ standards of practice, which speak of a duty to a patient-provider relationship grounded in rust, clear communication, and shared decision-making. Yet we know that more can be done to improve patient engagement across the health care system and, in particular, within primary care.
